Some Personal Things

Videos

Disc 1
[The camera shakes for a moment and then focuses on the figure of a very young girl, couldn't be older than three, in festive clothes, her hair done up in curls and braids. The girl peers up at the camera with a finger in her mouth, then smiles and reaches up towards it. A male voice cuts in, but isn't visible.]

Here we are, baby's first festival! We're just waiting for Mommy to be ready and then we'll—Ah, sweetie, be careful with that! [Because the little girl has grabbed the camera and is pulling.] No, no, that's not for babies, please—

[The image suddenly blurs as it's tossed to the ground. The screen goes black as a woman laughs, the little girl laughs and runs towards the camera, and adult feet follow with a sigh.]

Disc 2
[This is a big longer, and seems to be from a camera in a cockpit.

A glider hung lightly in the air, kept aloft by the winds and solar panels which helped to power the small craft. The pilot was young woman who alternated between looking at the maps pinned to the cockpit beside her. Finally she just laughed and tossed the maps behind her letting her touch on the stick ease.

"Tare, bless me, I've lost them again." She scratches her head a bit in mild frustrated embarrassment. "If you want to offer a little help, I won't say no."

And then she waited, just letting the ship fly steadily while she watches a bird in flight. It banks suddenly, catching an updraft sending it soaring off to her right, and she has only enough time to prepare before the same burst of wind catcher her ship. Her touch on the controls is light, but steady, and when she gets the solar glider under control again, she surveys her new heading and grins, catching sight of the floating solar platforms loosely tied together a mile or two off. The glass domes of the platforms making it nearly invisible against the sky.

She laughs brightly and blows a kiss to the sky. "Thank you, Tare, my love."]

Disc 3
[This one seems a lot longer, like someone was filming this entire day of celebration, with jumps in time, pieces edited together later.

It began with the rising of the sun. Folks gathered in the square, dressed in their finery under the warm breezes and the bright spring sunshine. It was a small community well away from the technological powerhouses, but as people continued to gather through the midday, it swelled until there were well over two hundred folks, in colorful finery, mingling together. Just after a large lunch, the music began and everyone moved to dance, lines and circles and squares, moving and mingling together. Mostly they were the youth of the community, but parents and even grandparents joined in, reveling in a return to their courting days.

Flowering trees and trellises shaded those who exhausted themselves in dance, while younger children played games and flew kites in the steady breezes near the mountains. Storytellers spun their tales, jugglers and acrobats capered and the easy feel of the celebration carried them through the dinner time and into the night. A bonfire lit the scene with the deepening of the night, and the music turned slower and the younger children were herded and carried away to their rest. The youth though remained, breaking into pairs for slower dances, flirtatious and innocent as they passed silent messages in the flowers they presented each other. They danced together now, slow and tender, and the crowds thinned slowly as some slipped away without word into the night to continue their courtships.]

Letters
"'To those who have survived. I leave you this note so that you know people have once been here. The winter was rough and many had died due to sickness, until it was only myself and two others.

If you are in search of power, you are in luck. The dam managed to survive. The generators still work. The door should have unlocked once it sensed a human nearby and activated the power. I've left a manual in the control room for the generators that should tell you what you might need to know about the generators.

I am sorry if you seek food, for that is gone. The winters are rough, so if you wish to stay, be cautious.

I am also sorry we have missed each other. I hope that perhaps, one day in the future, we will be able to meet when these times have ended.

Be strong, my brothers and sisters."

"[pressed flower attached to the piece of paper] Tare, bless them... I haven't found Ryen yet. Please, guide her home. I miss her. Let her know she is loved. The lily is for her. Please... Tare, bless her and keep her safe."

"The director has recommended we all take up writing. To keep us grounded, to keep us thinking, and hoping. I don't know if that's true, but it seems to have put some of the others at ease. I guess it couldn't hurt."

"Tare, bless me. It's our second anniversary. I held him in my arms last night as he died of the poisons. What do I do without him, Tare? How do I keep going? He was my life. I don't understand this! What did we do wrong?"

"The doc says the building is shifting. The ground is too wet. Even if we last through the winter, we might have to move in a few years."

"Jonah brought in a pet again. The laser nearly blasted him trying to get it. We keep telling the kids not to do it, but they just don't listen. We should keep the disarm code simple. Maybe write it near the number panel so it doesn't happen again.

They don't let us shut them off completely. Too risky of something bigger coming in."

"Tare, bless him. They took my son today. Kraig and the others wouldn't say, but they didn't bring his body home. He loved your winds, Tare. He trusted them to keep him safe. What happened? Why did he die?"

"Tare, bles you. Granpa wen to slep today. Mama sais he was happy caus he got to see the flowrs blowin in your wind. Thank you for makin him hapy Tare. Be ther for me to? I'd like to die happy."

"The ice is getting thicker and thicker. Journer Marsa is trying to keep it restrained, but there is only so much she can do. She says Albinia's power is waning. It will have to be enough. Hopefully at least some of us will make it to Spring.
